Prenuptial Agreements in Sweden

By Elena Giannattasio, International Family Lawyer (New York & San Francisco), Multi-Jurisdictional Divorce, PLLC

Sweden recognizes prenuptial agreements that are written and registered with the local district court. Once registered, the agreement becomes binding in determining the spouses’ financial relations. Courts may adjust terms only to avoid an “unreasonable” outcome, and such intervention is rare.

Our Global Practice Perspective

For international couples, Swedish prenups can provide strong predictability, especially when paired with a choice-of-law clause selecting the legal system most aligned with the couple’s global lifestyle.

From New York and San Francisco, international family lawyer Elena Giannattasio advises clients with cross-border family law matters involving Sweden, providing advanced forum analysis and strategic coordination with trusted local counsel in Swedish law and other relevant jurisdictions, as appropriate.
